Richard M. Meyers began practicing law in 1959. Apart from his first year in practice when he worked for Benjamin (“Ben”) Ungerman, he was primarily a sole practitioner until his son David joined him in the firm in 1997 when they formed their law partnership, Meyers & Meyers, LLP.

Richard focused primarily on commercial and corporate matters, airports, banking, construction and development, hotels and resorts, and civil litigation. He also served in the Albany County Legislature for 18 years and as majority leader of the Albany County Legislature for 15 years. At the conclusion of his tenure with the Albany County Legislature, he went on to be in-house or outside counsel for the Albany County Airport Authority, positions he held for almost 20 years.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Richard put himself through Syracuse while working three and four jobs, and graduated after two years as he was accepted early to New York Law School. After he graduated from law school, he came back to Albany, to start his legal career. Once he went out on his own, he never looked back.

Richard always considered Mayor Erastus Corning his professional mentor. Richard was also a mentor to others, most notably, to his son David, who continues the practice of law today in the tradition of his father.

Richard also volunteered his time, talent and treasure to various local charities, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Albany County Cancer Society, the St. Peter’s Hospital Board of Associates, Big Brothers of Albany County, the Dominican Sisters of the Sick and Poor, the Americanization Council, the Albany College of Pharmacy, the College of St. Rose, the Hyde Collection, the New York Law School Alumni Association, the Warrensburg Industrial Development Committee, St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church and Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany.

Richard passed away on October 12, 2021 from Covid pneumonia. He was 86 years old.
